Call for Papers: The IIIrd Annual Conference of the Romanian Centre for Russian Studies: War in Ukraine. What Does the Future of Central and Eastern Europe Look Like?

Building on the scholarly input of the previous conferences in 2022 and 2023 (the latest gathering 72 participants from 24 countries), this year’s event delves into the regional consequences of the Russian war against Ukraine. While sharing a communist past with Ukraine and Russia, the vast majority of countries in Central and Eastern Europe detached from this legacy and opted for the Western model, integrating into the EU and NATO. Considering this and the current events, the conference aims to explore and assess how the war in Ukraine influenced the region so far, what tendencies it brought in politics, economics, culture, and society as a whole, and what these developments forecast for Central and Eastern Europe. Moreover, the conference seeks to debate the means, plans, and preliminary results among the countries in Central and Eastern Europe in becoming more resilient and assume a bigger voice in continental security and European affairs in general. Nonetheless, considering its importance for the main focus of the conference, special attention will be granted to the forces that led to the current events, but also to the war itself, its unfolding, the difficulties within Ukraine, as well as in the Russian ranks. The conference also aims to examine the topic of Ukraine’s reconstruction, as a whole-of-society process, considering in parallel the economic spill over in Central and Eastern Europe.
We welcome researchers from different disciplines and career stages to send their contributions. Submissions from fields such as international relations, security and war studies, history, cultural studies, comparative politics, economics, gender studies, political science, and any other pertinent field of research are desirable, as we continue our endeavour to bring together the latest research that has the potential to shed light on the current events and the new reality.
The Conference Committee will consider papers, theoretical or empirical contributions, connected but not limited to the following topics:
- Origins of the Russian aggression in Eastern Europe;
- The impact of the war in Ukraine on the countries in Central and Eastern region;
- What regional processes did the war in Ukraine trigger in the Central and Eastern Europe?
- How did the states in Central and Eastern countries manage the war consequences? What were the biggest challenges?
- Domestic repercussions of the war in the Russia – economic and political.
- What is the role the countries in Central and Eastern Europe play in the reconstruction of Ukraine?
- Ukraine’s relation with its neighbours and how Kyiv is handling them;
- How did the support for Ukraine evolve in the region since the beginning of the war?
- To what extent can the countries in the Central in Europe play a bigger role in European security?
- The impact of the war on the enlargement process of the EU and NATO in the Western Balkans and in Eastern Europe
- The consequences of the war on the Baltic and Arctic areas security architecture
- What are the perspectives of bilateral relations between Russia and the countries in Central and Eastern Europe?
- Predictions and possible outcomes of the Russo-Ukrainian war.
Financial Conditions
There is no participation fee.
As part of our endeavour to encourage and promote young researchers in the field of Russian studies, we offer those accepted the financial support needed to cover travel costs (up to 300 Euros) and accommodation for three nights. Selection is based on the academic quality of the abstracts; the motivation letter, submitted alongside the abstract, is important.
The conference organizers encourage Ukraine-based and displaced Ukrainian scholars to participate in the event and may cover all costs for them, by competition.
For all participants meals are covered by the organizers.
The conference is organised with the support of EEA and Norwegian Grants through Fund for Bilateral Relations, Grant No. G2024-7380/2024, Project New Security Challenges in the Black Sea Region Due to the Russian Aggression in Ukraine.
Format: The Conference is held in a hybrid format: in-person participation in Bucharest, Romania, and virtual meetings on a specialised platform. In-person participation is encouraged.
