States and other entities employ various methods to commemorate their participation in historical armed conflicts. These methods can include the construction of monuments, establishment of war cemeteries, naming of streets and squares, organization of national holidays, and control over the portrayal of such events in educational materials, films, and other media. In some instances, non-democratic governments or other actors may attempt to influence the collective memory of these conflicts to serve their agenda, potentially marginalizing other perspectives, for example, that of civil society and grassroots initiatives, that aim to present alternative views on war and experiences of violence. Moreover, with time, the collective memory of war is likely to undergo changes as new generations arise, new discoveries are made, and new narratives about the past emerge.
The conference aims to provide a fresh perspective on war research and European experiences within the context of the development of memory policies, with a particular focus on materiality. Distinguished researchers from various disciplines, including history anthropology, ethnography, and sociology, will delve into the constructs and practices of memory policies that have undergone significant changes in recent years.
